More than 40 years ago at York Beach, Ogunquit, Drakes Island, Higgins
Beach and any other beach or rocky point that looked like it had good
waves.
These
are the legends of Maine Surfing.
This
web site is dedicated to these people and the ones who followed at the
"River mouth" and along the rocky coast of Maine. Summer and
Winter they surfed and fought the cold and snow of the icy Maine water
to capture the perfection of glassy waves from the Northeastern Atlantic.
Seasons changed as did the number of surfers with the seasons. Most
of those above surfed year round to stay in shape and prepare for Summer
Days on Maine's beautiful beaches.
Stories
about Surfing in Maine were written by Journelists like Howie Martin,
Bud Yallalee, in publications like DownEast Magazine, Foster's Daily
Democrat, and at least once in Sports Illustrated. A full length Movie
was made called "Ice in the Sun" which may now be lost for
all time unless some of the promoters for this website can chase down
the films original photographer.
Life
in those years was simple. No major responsibilities, just the beach...and
Surfing whenever we were blessed with waves.
Of
course we all went in different directions. Some of us still surf and
some of us don't. Regardless, whenever we can get together, the topic
is the same........... Surfing Maine.
